Advice from the Incredible Hulk

It seems that even the Incredible Hulk is not immune from SIRVA injuries as actor Lou Ferrigno recently revealed he was hospitalized after a vaccine shot for pneumonia left fluid in his bicep.  This occurrence was reported after the star of the Incredible Hulk series recently tweeted out a photo of himself from a hospital bed with an IV in his arm and stated “[w]ent in for a pneumonia shot and landed up here with fluid in my bicep.”

The actor went on to give advice to others that may be receiving a vaccine soon. “I’ll be ok but it’s important that you keep an eye on who’s giving the shot and make sure they not only swab the spot correctly but that you watch the needle come out of the package.”

These types of injuries, called SIRVA injuries (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration) are reactions or injuries that an individual can sustain in their shoulder as a result of receiving a vaccination. It is not clear in Ferrigno’s case, whether his injury was a reaction to the vaccination itself or whether it was the result of the shot being improperly administered.  Based on Ferrigno’s comments above, some have speculated that the skin on his arm may not have been properly disinfected, that the shot may have been given at an improper location on his arm, and/or that the needle or vaccine could have been mishandled prior to being administered.

Lou Ferrigno is certainly not alone in his experience as the number of reported SIRVA injuries have been increasing dramatically in recent years and are continuing to make up a greater and greater percentage of the overall cases filed in the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP).  For additional details and discussions on SIRVA injuries, as well as advice to follow to lessen the risk of such injuries, feel free to read prior blog entries on this topic posted on our website.
